LSB® – achieving professional results in DIY

With the pleasant weather most of Australia receives year-round, its no wonder that we’ve wholeheartedly embraced outdoor living.

Getting together around the barbeque, passing a lazy summer afternoon swinging in a hammock, or providing a shaded play
area for children are just some reasons why purpose-built outdoor entertaining areas are increasingly popular. This family at Murphy’s Creek near Toowoomba in Queensland are no different to any other Australian family when it comes to their love of the great outdoors.

And now, easy to use LiteSteel® beam (LSB®) is making it possible for home renovators and DIY enthusiasts to achieve outstanding results.

This impressive outdoor entertaining space was built by its owner and a good mate, with the only professional involvement being its design by a qualified engineer.

The structure, measuring 6.5 m by 8.5 m, was constructed over four days using conventional tools – a time-saving benefit of using LSB. LSB made the grade on all of the structure’s requirements – it needed to be strong and able to withstand the weather, yet be serviceable and attractive. With its design making the most of an open plan and clean lines, the materials used met the challenge of blending with the existing house and landscaping on the block.

The products used resulted in a structure that boasts a quality finish.

Building the structure on a sloping block behind an existing house with no room – or budget – for a crane called for a building material that was light enough to carry by hand that could take the load
required and measure up to 8.5 m in a single span.

The choice was LSB. Forty percent lighter than traditional hot rolled structural steel beams of equivalent performance, it can be lifted and carried like a timber beam.

Further, the product offers exceptional corrosion resistance – perfect for this outdoor application.

LSB proved easy for on-site working – the outdoor entertaining pavilion was constructed with only a saw, two spanners and a drill.

The product was easily cut and drilled on site, and welded cleats made for easy connections
using standard bolts.

An outstanding result was achieved, and the owner was impressed with the significant time and cost advantages delivered by LSB.

LSB is a practical choice for professionals and DIY enthusiasts – outstanding results like this outdoor entertaining area can be achieved with a design by a qualified engineer and easily-available
conventional tools.

The owner is looking forward to years of outdoor entertaining in his hand-built, economical structure that is the pride of his backyard – and the talk of his next barbie!
