LiteSteel beam rafters maximise living space
Using Smorgon Steel LiteSteelTM beam (LSBTM) as rafters is giving builders like Aurora Constructions a competitive edge in delivering affordable new homes which offer plenty of open plan living space.
When constructing two new homes in Edenbrooke Estate, south-east Queensland, Aurora Constructions selected LSB as rafters for its light-weight ability to achieve long spans without requiring support structures that would impede the open plan design of the homes.
LSB proved ideal as rafters to support the skillion roofs, each pitched at 30°, satisfying the requirement for a slim appearance which could not be achieved with trusses.
With the homes intended for sale to a typically middle-class market, it was important to contain construction costs throughout the project.
The LSB rafters could be lifted and handled on-site eliminating the need for a crane and significantly reducing project costs.
With LSB weighing in at around 40% lighter than hot rolled steel beams of similar capacity, LSB delivered lighter on-site handling without compromising on structural performance.
All participants in the projects, including South East Steel Framing and Structerre Consulting Engineers, appreciated the benefits LSB generated.
The affordable, open plan living made possible with LSB and the termite and white-ant resistance offered by their all steel construction makes the Aurora homes a very attractive choice in the marketplace.
